Update: It seems the first report I heard was rather distorted and had nothing to do with a bus shelter!

Labour MP Charged With Criminal Damage
I just got cut off in my prime on Sky News when the breaking news came through that Labour MP Rob Marris has been arrested for attacking a bus shelter. Yes, you did read that right. causing criminal damage. I don't know what they put in the water in Wolverhampton South West at this time of year but it was 40 years ago this weekend that Marris's predecessor but two Enoch Powell made his rivers of blood speech. This time it's not the River Tiber foaming with much blood, but a Labour MP foaming at the mouth!

I thought he'd stepped on a van to get to a bus ? The whole thing is a bit confused, so best not rush to a judgement, eh ?
ReplyDeleteCold, boring, faceless, uninviting - he probably thought he had bumped into Gordon Brown.
ReplyDeleteNot right - the incident is described in the Daily Mail quite differently here.
ReplyDeleteThe Daily Mail must have been itching to have a good go, but still they manage to write something which makes the van driver look clearly in the wrong.
I did like that question 'what do the french think of Gordon Brown'
ReplyDelete'Zey dont know ou e iz"
Lucky them.
The BBC's reporting of the story is very different. Nothing about smashed bus shelters:
ReplyDeleteA Labour MP has been charged with criminal damage.
Rob Marris, MP for Wolverhampton South West, is alleged to have climbed over the bonnet of a parked van to board a bus in Pennfields, Wolverhampton.
The incident is alleged to have taken place last month. Mr Marris, 53, was charged on Thursday and will appear before magistrates later this month.
Mr Marris, a former solicitor who became an MP in 2001, said he intended to plead not guilty to the charge.
"This is a personal matter which has no bearing on my parliamentary duties and the law must quite properly take its course," he said.
Mr Marris is also a member of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) and Greenpeace.
criminal damage can mean anything - or nothing! I suspect that he was just having a bad day and was annoyed at a moron in a white van who wouldn't move from his illegal parking spot!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would have let down the van's tyres to teach the driver a lesson.
Haven't the police got more urgent duties to attend to in Wolverhampton? Why on earth are they clogging up their time, the CPS's time etc, with this nonsense?
ReplyDeleteMr Marris is also a member of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) and Greenpeace.
ReplyDeleteI think that probably tells you everything you really need to know about this tit.
I think from the report Mr Marris could become a representative for the silent majority who are continually put upon by the selfish oafs in this world.
ReplyDeleteBorn in Wolverhampton , Mr Marris was initially educated at the £10,000 a year Birchfield Preparatory School near Wolverhampton before boarding at the £25,000 a year St Edward's School in Oxford.
ReplyDeleteSounds a bit of a bonkers but in other ways the typical Labour MP
.(Labour blue blood and public school boy Boothroyd will confirm this )
PS Ex Liberal Party member Iain Dale. I have just watched the brilliant snippet of you speaking to Hefferlump about Thatcher. He said " One of the lies that is told , not by you because you are an honest man , was that Thatcher didn't say what she was going to do"
Well I can remember you saying exactly this referring to her manifesto from 79.In fact I am pretty sure it is your view that Thatch was conciliatory to the left prior to power. This is such an interesting and important subject in the interpretation of Cameron and in general .Why do you not body forth your views in an article? You did not make any defence against Heffer whose first 100 days impressed me no end and you failed to counter the suggestion that Cameron is , god forbid , a new Heath .
What about addressing these points on your blog. Personally I think the only Heath in town is Clegg but anyway I`d love to see a bit more flesh on these bones from you.
Oh God- Marris- one of the most boring MP's in the Commons! I was watching the parly channel yesterday:the Lisbon Constitution was on. The usual suspects were there: Heathcoat-Amory & dear old Bill Cash and who was waffling a point on extract 32, paragraph 787, sentence 101- yep-Marris. He doesn't seem excitable enough to do criminal damage. he could bore people to oblivion though.
ReplyDeleteThe van was stopped illegally at a bus stop, blocking passengers' access and refused to move, despite being asked repeatedly by people wanting to get on the bus.
ReplyDelete'The supreme function of getting on a bus is to provide against preventable evils. In seeking to do so, it encounters obstacles which are deeply rooted in human nature. One is that by the very order of things such evils are not demonstrable until they have occurred: at each stage in their onset there is room for doubt and for dispute whether they be real or imaginary. By the same token, they attract little attention in comparison with current troubles, which are both indisputable and pressing: whence the besetting temptation of all politics to concern itself with the immediate present at the expense of the future.'
ReplyDeleteHaving read the Mail report, I have to say well done that Labour MP and I am a Conservative

ReplyDeleteA Labour MP travelling by bus; surely he would have called for a taxi if his driver and car hadn't arrived promptly?
ReplyDeleteIs the Audi advert attached to this post legal, decent honest and truthful as per the CAP code?
ReplyDeleteEvery time I log on I am the 999,999th visitor - which cannot be true every time.
And I read that I have been selected to win a car - which is not truthful, as a) I have not been selected (it will appear to everyone) and b) I have not been selected to win anything, but merely have the opportunity to take part in some sort of Raffle.
If I am mistaken, please accept my apologies and tell me the branch from where I can collect my new motor.
You may say, and I would accept, that it is unlikely that anybody visiting this site will believe the advert should be taken at face value - so why make it? It is just an insult to people's intelligence, which is even worse than a breach of the code.
The advert certainly doesn't do anything for my opinion of Audi, as it makes me wonder what other claims they make may have to be read with circumspection.
The whole thing lowers the tone of the site, please get rid of it.
Newmania - Cameron is most assuredly the new Heath. Even those lofty, "I'm-above-all-this-pettiness" chortles.
ReplyDeleteThe current state of my Hate Hall of Fame is:
No 1: Tony Blair. This is set in concrete.
No 2: David Cameron.
No 3: Gordon Brown.
Gordon Brown is loathesome, but at least he has never ordered a standing ovation for his tribe's number one enemy.
He climbed over a car parked at a bus stop I believe. Rather heroic. Unlike the former Tory minister with a drinking problem who set upon a Tory canvasser but went unreported.
ReplyDeleteFrom early reports, not much of scandal is it?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't gloat too much, MPs from all parties get caught clambering over things occasionally.
For a greater scandal, I personally can't understand why there was no furore when Keith Vaz was appointed as HAC chair (incl. overseeing the police). I would think a suspension for corruption would tend to rule one out for that position. He even obstructed the investigation. Hope that isn't libellous. I'll go Anon for once.
Profound comment: Mr Marris looks much younger than 53.
Sounds like it's the van driver who ought to be up before the beak.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is, the van driver probably votes Labour!
ReplyDeleteTo be fair the Police cannot win in these situations. If any damage was caused, and I stress "if" I would have told him to pay for it and given the van driver a ticket at the same time. That should have sorted it out.
