Politically Partisan Fact of the Day: No 94
There has never been a British winner of the Wimbledon men's tournament under a Labour government.
But we have won one football world cup, one rugby union world cup, 4 Eurovision song contests (0,0 and 4 for the Tories)- and the last British woman to win at Wimbledon (the final and possibly even a game) - and Fred Perry was socialist to boot. Not very good at this game are you Iain!
We've never hosted the Olympics under a Conservative government, nor won the right to host a games that actually happened.
(The 1908 games were allocated to London in 1906, switched from Rome after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius; there was a Liberal government. The 1944 games were allocated to London in June 1939 during the Conservative-led National government, but the games were cancelled. The 1948 games were allocated to London in September 1946 under a Labour government. The 2012 games were allocated to London in July 2005 under a Labour government).
Oops - I should have only said 1 Eurovision song contest under the Tories. Might also be worth comparing Olympic Gold Medals under Blair with those under Thatcher.
Also West Ham are more likely to win things under a Labour Government (2 major trophies under each - but how many more years of Tory Government in their history)
Sorry Iain - but are we missing sonething important or cryptic here? Have you been at the sherry?
ReplyDeleteNo British guy has won it since Fred Perry since 1936.
ReplyDeleteEngland have never won the World Cup without a Leicester City player.
ReplyDeleteThe Tories have never won an election in which Iain Dale was running for MP.

ReplyDeleteUp until 1978/79 England had never won the Ashes under a Labour Government. We've now done it twice under Labour rule.
ReplyDeleteAnd did you know that Fred Perry's father was a Labour MP.

ReplyDelete3 under Chamberlain.
ReplyDeleteI'd keep quiet about that Ian.
...and...?!
ReplyDeleteWe only won the World Cup under Labour!
ReplyDeleteMust wish you hadn't started this one, eh?
