The 18 year old twins of one of Harlow's Lib Dem councillors are candidates in our local elections.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I would not have voted for either of them even when I was a Lib Dem supporter as I view them as far too young and inexperienced.

iain. I agree the Lib Dem comment on this leaflet fro the West Midlands is wrong. Of course it didn't stop the Tories using it around town in Fakenham four years ago to denigrate myself and my running mate who was, at the time, 22 years of age.

ReplyDeleteI've been a Parish Councillor and a school governor since I was 21. In fact, I'm up for re-election (not for the first time, of course) to the Parish this Thursday, as well as standing as an Independent for the District.
ReplyDeleteNot so very long ago, Derwentside District Council had a Chairman in his twenties. One of the current portfolio holders was under 30 when appointed. No one seems to think this sort of thing at all odd.

ReplyDeleteFantastic debate. It starts with an excellent post about how council candidates should not be denigrated due to their age; then Iain's acolytes start denigrating a party leader because of his age.

It's ageism across the board, but sadly because older/elderly are more likely to vote, it can gain votes.
ReplyDeleteWe have a 32 yr old Lib Dem and a 19 yr old Tory standing in different wards in Elmbridge BC, Surrey, Walton on Thames. Both have encountered ageist electors on the doorstep.
When I became a councillor at 25 it was the older voters who seemed most positive about me.
ReplyDeleteOlder voters said "It's nice to see someone young standing for a change".
Younger voters were the ones who had the least interest as most of them seemed to think that anyone young that was interested in politics must be strange.
Let's not get too worked up about this, people. The writer started from the proposition that he was supporting the Lib dem and then wrote the commentaries to fit round that point of view. A valuable insight into how the Lib dems formulate policy.
ReplyDeleteLabour did exactly the same thing about the tory candidate in last years elections for Birmingham Erdington, who was 23, ( you can see a post election version of her rant on her website www.susannamccorry.com under articles). He went on to beat her easily and I suspect that given her rant this year she will again get soundly beaten by this years candidate.
