Will the LibDems Speak With One Voice Over Coalitions?

Last night at the UCL Foundation Dinner Simon Hughes absolutely ruled out a coalition with either
Lab or Con, and said that a minority government would be necessary if no one party had a majority. Well, it's a point of view but it certainly doesn't accord with what Ming Campbell has either said or hinted at. When will they ever learn?

  1. When will they learn not to say one thing in one place and the opposite in another? Never it seems. They have been described as the Kentucky Fried chicken of UK politics - franchises everywhere. But with KFC you get a consistent offering - not with the Lib Dems though!

You mean like Cameron over the Iraq war Jonathan? Remember that by election leaflet...

Or like the Cameroons allegedly briefing that they actually hate Polly etc etc...

  3. Or like the Cameroonies saying:
"Fantastic we've done in the appointed Lords"
When hardly any of them had.

Simon Hughes is always shooting from the hip.

  5. Lib Dems can be so touchy.. shouldnt they be going back to their constituencies and preparing for Government? Ming was such an inspired choice!

  6. Not so much a difference of opinion as a difference of stated policy. Ming wants to have a coalition with Labour, but Hughes can see that the voters will not vote Lib Dem because it would be seen (rightly) as a vote for Labour. It is all very desperate.

All these years on the catchphrase that Liberals are a Labour-saving device remains incredibly accurate. As for Polly, I support Cameron and I have fisked her today. The woman is a joke.

  7. Iain, To answer your question, No!

They have based their whole political philosophy on saying different things to different people!

  8. Actually, I think we learned our lesson pretty well between 1999 and 2006. Unfortunately though, it would appear that we've forgotten it again.

  9. Will they even speak with one voice on the EU?

How about Conservatives speaking democratically, with the UK people's voice, David Cameron? By giving us a Referendum and abiding by the majority view?

Talking of the iniquitious EU, BBC Have Your Say currently have a poll on the EU.

  13. Can't understand why the Libdems don't get with the programme, realise that the Tories are going to win by a landslide and make sure they get their slice of the cake by giving Labour a good kicking.

Labour will be back-stabbing each other like hell once they lose and the LibDems have a good chance of becoming the official opposition in the election after next.
