TIME Magazine on David Cameron

TIME Magazine has an extended feature of David Cameron in this week's issue featuring a couple of quotes from, ahem, yours truly. Read it HERE. I'm afraid one or two of you might need to have a sick bucket by your side when you read the first quote, which I have to say I don't remember saying, but anything's possible.

That's not true, but like many an Englishman who ingested stodgy food at boarding school, David Cameron, 40, the leader of Britain's Conservative Party, lacks sharp angles.

Are they suggesting he might be as sharp as a butter knife?

This is quite interesting; here is the crucial passage in digest form.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Vote blue, go green." etc....
worried the party faithful... Cameron big ideas to appeal across party lines. Blah blah
THE DALE BIT
"You have to do what Bill Clinton did and build a big tent," says Dale, paying respect to.(…blah blah). pot-smoking, skirt-chasing lefty. But "even" Dale would like Cameron to “signal” to traditional Tories that "the old issues will be treated as seriously as the new ones." That might mean an overt reiteration of the Tories' traditional claim to be the party of low taxation. Or — always a favorite with the right wing — blaming the European Union for Britain's ills.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Old ", issues like prodigious taxation and loss of democracy? These are indeed the favourite peccadilloes of the Conservative Party ; minor quibbles that keep niggling away ,despite an understandable desire to be included in a broad tent , with pot smoking , skirt chasing lefties.

“Even Dale…..” Hmmmmmm. What can that mean ?

Iain - maybe when you said "Kennedyesque glamour" you were thinking of Charles Kennedy rather than John F. Kennedy :)

Oh. My. God. Iain, you should wash your mouth out with soap for that. And your nose for good measure; it must need a good cleaning.

Paging Lloyd Bentsen...

"Synthetic, flacky glamour" is more like it.

The polls are a lie. 34% is consistently factored out (and the headline figure recalculated accordingly) as being, not "Don't Know", but firmly determined not to vote.

Socially conservative economic populists, thus doubly opposed to the neocon war agenda, determined the American midterms and have just seen their Senate-clinching standard-bearer deliver the Democratic Party's official response to the State of the Union Address.

So, where and when will the touchpapers be lit across Europe, North America and the Antipodes? In America in 2008, or in Britain in 2009?

Either way, the flames will take no time to consume so light a weight as David Cameron.

'Here's a warning for the conservative comer: if the Sun thinks you're not substantial enough, that's a weighty problem to worry about.' (Time Mag)

It is indeed. It really still is the Sun wot'll win it.

My view is that Cameron would lose the 'unsubstantial' tag and be a much more credible contender if he'd just come out of his corner, stop fighting on the ropes - and follow his own instincts instead of those of his second.
