The Prime Minister Has Expressed Full Confidence in Joan Ryan

Well that's her finished then.

  1. This Prime Minister shows nothing but contempt for the people of Great Britain, especially England, he is a disgrace to us all. He thinks he is someone on the international stage but no one takes any notice of him. He is clinging on to power like a wet biscuit at the bottom of a mug,and will continue to do so unless he is overthrown by his own backbenchers. Which scenario, given their abject uselessness, appears unlikely.

  3. Joan Ryan is a junior Minister at the Home Office. See the stories below...

  4. Yesterday morning you predicted the demise of John Reid, by yesterday evening it was Minister of State Tony McNulty, now we've slipped down to Parliamentary Undersecretary level.

Have you got your list of PPSes at the Home Office to hand?

  5. Let's see how long he expresses confidence in Gautleiter Reid, then.

Interesting The Dear Leader's lieutenants are being interviewed under caution, eh?

  6. Remember that famous sketch in Spitting Image where John Major was King Midas, but instead of gold - everything he touched turned to sh*t. Now that's Tony Blair that is. If I was Joan Ryan I'd be sorting out my CV.

  8. It is feeling more and more like the dying days of the Major government, but with 4 years to go till the next election! With the economy turning down Brown won't want an early election so it looks like we're all in for an unpleasant few years...

  9. Fair cop.You didn't predict his resignation. Just his eviseration. I suppose technically he might have been able to carry on when torn in half - is that your argument? :-)

  10. ed. You are dead right. What you all forget is that thw wheel of political fortune is always turning - sometimes faster, sometimes slower - but always turning. Sooner or later "the people" tire of even the most popular icon - Gladstone, Wilson, Thatcher (by proxy Major) and turn them out. In addition to the sink of corruption, that is what is happening now, and Gordon will just be dropped off the end.

  11. OK, the whole episode does reek of incompetence and there is a risk that some of the 2700 names, being dangerous criminals, may have committed crimes that might have otherwise been prevented, but I am sure the government would rathjer we were discussing that than the fact that another government agency failed to account properly for the amount of plutonium held for civil purposes. Criminals who have been released from prison can come and go as they please, so kjeeping track may not be simple, but the governemnt should be tracking the whereabouts of every ounce of plutonium.

The corrected figures for 2005 were released yesterday:

  13. New Labour was helped to power by Bill Clinton's fixers so in that vein are the Reid/Home Office stories engineered by the Brown camp to discredit a potential rival ?

  14. we can all recall the complete confidence Blunkett reported having in Beverley Hughes!

  15. "It is feeling more and more like the dying days of the Major government, but with 4 years to go till the next election!" says Ed at 12.47 today. I'm not sure that there should have been a "but". The Major Govt was already dying in 1993 and we had to wait until 1997 for it to be put down, despite a spirited attempt at euthanasia in 1995.

Incidentally Iain, have you ever thought of putting dates as well as times on comments as sometimes one cannot tell how "live" a discussion is?
