Poll: LibDem MP of the Year

So who is your LibDem MP of the Year? I've included twenty of the most high profile or influential LibDem MPs in the poll. I guess we'll all have our criteria for voting in this award (he says coyly!), but I'll tell you that my vote will be going to either Nick Clegg or Chris Huhne - for whcih neither will thank me! Vote in the column on the left. The result will be announced in the week after Christmas.

  1. Its Lembit Opik, every political friend he makes turns out to be a wrongun then he shags the cheeky girls, he is Lloyd George reincarnated and my hero.
    A class act.

  2. Why isn't Jeremy Thorpe mentioned? Doesn't the LibDem leader count for anything?

I once came across his hit man inside. He shot the dog instead!

What was all this funny handshakes between him and the prison governor?

I'll vote for the one who votes for all prisoners to have the vote.

  3. Lembit Opik purely for the fact he's shagging a Cheeky Girl.

  4. do we really have to vote on the best lib dem? (also, if you do conservatives, will you put patrick cormack on the list?)

  5. no i would go for Mark Oaten. After all it is a skill to find the only rent boy in the UK that knows the Lib Dem front bench.

  6. Surely Francis Maude should be on the list.

  7. No John Leech? He is number 4 or something in his party's transport team. Which presumably means all of them are "front bench" on something. How can this scowling menace win newcomer of the year across the whole house and not even get into Dale's list? Still there will be a poll in a year or three and I'd guess he will be no better than second in that one.

  8. I wonder if Lembit would have had this many votes if you'd run the poll last week. Mark Oaten's also doing surprisingly well for such a liability. Is this a vote for the most competent and capable Lib Dem MP, or a vote for the one that's provided the best entertainment value over the past year?!

For what it's worth, I voted for Vincent Cable. I think he's extremely credible, comes across well, a genuinely nice politician, and gives the Lib Dems some much-needed strength in economic policy, which is the area where we're often perceived to be weakest by the general public. He's perhaps less flashy, and less sexy, than the others, but I really think we'd be lost without him.

  9. Is it true that Lembit Opik (real name Casanova -anag.) is going to write a leaflet on how to pull celebrity birds?

  10. nick clegg - if ever there was a threat to Cameron, or even Gordon Brown, it is he.

the guy just comes across so well on television - and lets face it, thats what wins elections nowadays , much as we wish it wasnt so.

  11. David Heath...he replies to letters and turns up to parliament.

  12. Lembit Opik for services to women

    ReplyDelete
  13. Surely Michael Moore is that American bloke who makes ridiculous lefty movies?

And I refuse to accept that anyone is really called Willie Rennie.

I don't think he is a LibDem MP currently. (The poll is about the LibDem MP of the year.)

Actually he never have been a LibDem MP, as when he was a MP, LibDems didn't exist yet. He was a leader of the Liberal Party, not LibDems.

  15. lib dem of the year!

    this smacks of consolation prizes!

I will go for Opik if he can give us a foolproof wqy of tlling the cheeky girls apart

  16. A tough one. Mark Oaten was always going to be the winner with his rather odd hobbies, and ability to eat the same stuff as the LibDem generally say. But with a late-breaking entrant in the form of Lembit Opik and dumping his z-list celeb girlfriend for a z-list reality TV singing celeb. On balance I'd go for Oaten on the basis he blamed his rent-boy habit on his baldness. A winner!

  17. Will the final jury be made up of rent boys and cheeky girls?

    ReplyDelete
  18. "Best LibDem" - surely an oxymoron.

    ReplyDelete
  19. My vote would go to Norman Baker or, possibly, Vince Cable.

The rest of them are a complete waste of space.

  20. Iain - you're confusing me with someone who gives a monkey's ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Susan Kramer / Evan Harris ? Surely they are Newsnight journos not MPs?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd say Michael Moore - the way he stood up for his principles with that speech when he accepted the Oscar for Fahrenheit 9/11 was excellent..

    ReplyDelete
  23. Lynne Featherstone - her book 'Eats, shoots and leaves' has re-introduced respect for English Grammar.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Julia Goldsworthy - for succeeding in the cut throat world of PR...

    ReplyDelete
  25. How come no Charles Kennedy... I admit 2006 not the best year for Charlie but he has got to be somewhere in a list of 20 Lib Dems.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have now voted for Vincent Cable on the basis that he is the only option named after a useful item of electrical equipment.

Mr. Optic was a close second for Services To The Visually Aware, but lost out with basic poor spelling.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Only one worth voting for is Charles Kennedy - even a bit sloshed he is better than this lot.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I can't vote Iain, there is no option for "none of them "

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mark Oaten is a must for LDem MP of the year- he's caused more hilarity than any of the rest of 'em! Not only did he humiliate himself over the 'rent boy' stuff, he went and humiliated himself again on the 'daily politics' keep fit thingy! An absolutely priceless example of why not to vote Ldem!

  30. It could only be Lembit Opik, for ditching a Weathergirl for a Cheekygirl. Naughty Mr. Opik with his crazy name and crazy girlfriend.

  31. I am shocked! Shocked that your punters are taking this poll in a light-hearted and risible spirit.

Surely, Vince Cable, for whom I voted, is Lib-Dem of the year - being the only Lib Dem not to have been smeared, or smeared anyone else or shagged a cheeky girl. Moreover he consistently gives an intelligent and erudite performance in the house.

Lembit, on the other hand, has shagged Sian, shagged a cheeky girl and backed two rather effemeral (sic) (queer today, gone tomorrow)would-be leaders.

Vince also, as "geoff" pointed out, lends itself more readily to word associations.

Wasn't Vince Cable and the Hotwires a a fifties Rock Group?

  32. I just love entering internet polls to see if my choice turns out to be the winner.
Bit of a problem here though, don't know who they are, sorry.

  33. Why is David 'Web' Cameraon missing from the list?
Surely he has done more to promote LibDem policies this year than the LibDems.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, one more vote for Dave Cameraon for the same reasons as Jimmy gave.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think Lembit had better start work on his acceptance speech now ?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Has to be Limpdick Opcit, but why no space for John Hemming?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lembit Opik

For he is a cheeky boy, he is a cheeky boy...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wot no Tim Farron? You surely can't ignore the vegetarian chairman of the all-party hill farming group?
