Tory MP to Stand Down

I'm told that Michael Mates is announcing this evening that he will stand down at the next election.

  1. Lord Mates of Asil Nadir will be elevated to the Senate in The Sky with Lord Charlie Falconer

  3. Good riddance. Hopefully a proper Conservative will replace this europhile Heseltine henchman.

  5. Maybe he, unlike Asil Nadir, did allow the illegitimi to grind him down.

  6. how many more of the 'grey listers' who were meant to keeping going will now decide to leave? should be a plum seat for an A Lister or indeed a local! Only priority candidate i can think of is Conor Burns who would be a good local bet.

  7. ">"Don't let the buggers get you down", Asil, er, Michael. Good riddance you old fool. Pity you didn't go out in the cull of '97 along with the rest of the dead wood that made the cull of '97 so inevitable. So there!

  9. He has served well for many years and has brought experience and common sense to many debates. His participation on influential committees is to be commended as to his need to put the interests of the country first. Thank you for your valuable contribution Mr Mates.

  11. 'Don't let the buggers get you down'

A documentary was made about that that....and it explains why Michael Mates was left standing. He was quite right.

There was (is?) a great deal of media manipulation in the 90s, aimed chiefly at undermining the Conservative Party with lies, distortion and misrepresentation.

  14. At the time of my submitting this, there have been 13 against Michael and only one for him. So I will have to point out that he was a valuable Chair of the Northern Ireland Select Committee. But then I am a socialist in the Belfast Agreement mould.
