Quote of the Day: No 94
Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, on 18DoughtyStreet...
Is it just me,or has this blog degenerated from what was a good political read,no matter what your affiliation,to an extended commercial for 18 Doughty Street?
radders, 18 Doughty Street could change the face of political broadcasting in the UK and the message needs to be spread as widely as possible. I urge you to watch the interview with Shami; it is worthy of mention on any serious political blog.
I love shami chakrabarti - her effort in resisting that nonsense with the 90 day detention have to be applauded.
I can't help thinking that by putting her on the 'barcelona' you did help her look even more petite. Perhaps you should have swapped places with her ? Or get a bigger sofa ? After all you might need it for your cabinet once you are the PM ?
The world's stock of seafood will collapse by 2050 at present rates of fishing. And by that year the pressures of world population on land will mean producing meat is going to become increasingly expensive so expect most people will be vegetarian.
I enjoyed the Shami interview. It was a shame that emails could not get through for technical reasons until almost the end of the interview. It was good that the prisoners votes case was aired. However, I do not accept Iain's claim that he is liberal thinking on this issue. His attitude was clearly illiberal in a so-called liberal democracy, and he displayed his ignorance, fear and prejudice on the subject. Whilst he listened to Shami to the extent that he heard the quote which he has blogged here, obviously he was not listening to Shami's response to my email question. This is evidenced by Shami referring to her good friend Juilet Lyon (director of the Prison Reform Trust), who she said was campaigning for prisoners votes. I emailed comment@18doughtystreet.com to say why Juilet Lyon is not taking up this issue, and Iain said he did not understand the email and wondered who Juiliet Lyon is...Duh!
Iain Dale Nothing wrong with useing this site to promote 18 DS. The BBC uses public money to promote itself constantly. It may have escaped some that reading blogs and watching internet TV channels is not compulsary, and is free.
BTW there is more state imformation/propergander now on commercial radio and TV then the BBC.
Keep up the good work 18 DS is every bit as good as I expected it to be.
Only shame is, that it's 2 years too late to save the country, from what we are now going to receive and fully deserve.
Quote of the Day? You stole my gimmick Mr. Dale, therefore I must thrash you to within an inch of your life like I did to my young fag when I was at Eton. I believe his name was "Dave" or something like that!
Left or right you've gotta agree that woman has a head on her shoulders. I had no idea who she was the first time I ran across her on the airwaves, but thought my god, she can actually get the rest to shut up long enough to listen to her which is an essential skill in the political sphere nowadays. Not only that, but when she talks it's worth listening to; even if she's opposing you, you should be taking notes.
Give Iain a break. This is his blog and 18 Doughty Street is clearly his big project at the moment. Of course he's going to use his blog to talk about it.
That's just one url from someone I know that wrote she only looks like a veggie a long before your interview, but I've seen more and I'm trying to remember the original writer...
I like Chakrabatti, but she is similiar in many ways to Galloway...talks good sense and honesty half the time, a pile of shite the other half, and they never seen to reconcile each other.
The problem with Shami is that she seems to think certain people need to have their rights looked after more than others. She is inconsistent on the rights of the individual and tends to spend her time defending the nefarious over the average decent subject.
What's all this chakrabarti worship about? I'm with Lagwolf on this; every time I see her on the box she talks complete bollox. And the BBC/C4 being what they are, nobody challenges her.
Good quote. Liked the program tonight.

ReplyDeleteBrilliant programme with Shami last night. Proper, in-depth discussion of important issues, with a sense of humour thrown in.
ReplyDeleteAn impressive lady.

ReplyDeleteYoung vegetarian ladies have very nice skins and of course look young.

Don't you mean Ann Widdecombe?
ReplyDeleteRadders, No you are not alone. I have the feeling that Iain is losing a bit of interest in this blog, which is a great pity for his fans.
ReplyDeleteI fancy the pants of her even if she looks like a veggie...

ReplyDeleteWith dark bags under her eyes like that she should change her diet and go to sleep for a month.

ReplyDeleteI have to say I do find this woman rather lovely and not just politically (she is a great classical liberal).
ReplyDeleteA fascinating interview. The usual bluster from Shami about human rights without responsibilites but other than that a good watch.
ReplyDeleteYou going for the North Norfolk nomination Iain? Or is it a case of "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here!" ;-)

ReplyDeleteStill, better to look like a vegetarian than look like a vegetable, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteClass? I think not and not exactly an original quote is it?

ReplyDeleteChakrabarti is a classic liberal which is what the whole world needs now and Britain desperately needs in particular.
ReplyDeleteShe is only young but has all the potential to be a true Conservative one day seemingly quite soon.
Almost all true Conservatives start out as liberals. All true Nazis start out as socialists.
This after the last 10 years has become apparent to even directors of Liberty. Whatever next?
