Just finished doing an hour with JOURNALISM studies postgrads in Cardiff and heading on to Edmonton to host an Evening with Ann Widdecommbe at the local theatre.
I owe my audience in Cardiff an apology. In my post this morning I described them as 'media studies' students rather than 'journalism' studies students. Talk about how to get on the wrong side of an audience! Anyway, they were in forgiving mood and we had a lively Q and A session. They seemed far more interested in 18DoughtyStreet than my blog, but asked far better and more searching questions than most of the mainstream media journos I have been interviewed by on the subject. Right, the M4 beckons... Contrary to popular rumour I do not post on.the blog while in the fast lane!
Keep on Trucking!
ReplyDeleteWe are indeed journalism students. Cheers Iain. And great talk. A few thoughts on it here. adamhaigh.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThere is no such thing as a fast lane - that lane is for overtaking only! Tory drivers, think they own the outside lane - huh!
ReplyDeleteIain, You should know better... There is NO SUCH THING as THE FAST LANE on a motorway!
ReplyDeleteThis would be the same journalism course that our mutual friend Richard studied on.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed your visit to the lovely Cardiff Central Constituency. A far better quality of people in that constituency, I always thought.
IAIN
ReplyDeleteHmmm chatting to trainee creeps ? Have you given up all thoughts of getting back into parliament. I `m pretty sure it wouldn`t be hard and god knows the Conservative Party need you.Cabinet ..easy.I agree with you on tax cuts and I also think the manner in whichg David cameron has presented his stance is an insult to the intelligence of the British voter.
Taxcuts or stability? That is not the choice and a recent survey showed that the majority of ordinary people are economically literate enought to wonder what he is talking about
If Ian took the train he would be obeying the Chamereon edict to be 'green'. As a loyal Davisista this would be a Severn Bridge too far.
ReplyDeleteFunny, loking at Ian's picturre, the word 'fast' is not the one which jumps most readily into one's head.
Typical that students were better than the media- listening to the Today program's interview technique I can understand your thinking afterall why get baracked for five minutes, when you can explain your point over an hour and get sensible questions instead of incomprehensible insults.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that the interest was in Doughty, rather than your blog. As I can't access Doughty [doesn't operate on the web] I have to get updates here from you.
ReplyDeleteI think another correction is in order: they seem to be journalism students, not journalism studies students. Let's not get too meta.
ReplyDeleteTax cuts-excellent piece over on ConHome from Dominic Lawson along with copy of letter from Nigel Lawson.
ReplyDeleteIf Flip Osborne and his mate Dangerous Dave were thinking of growing a financial spine then they might like to read the letter and then listen to Lord Lawson's comments on PM last evening!
ADAM HAIG :journalism students...did I say trainnee creeps .This little apple-shiner is already fully qualified.Perhaps you would like to carry sir`s books Adam ,you invertebrate.
ReplyDeleteI see Cameron is using the Gordon Brown tactic of dragging irrelevant matierial in to the tax conversation in the hope noone will understand him. See DT lead article.
Iain,
ReplyDeleteIs there something going on between you & Ann Widdecommbe ? You seem to see quite a lot of each other.
I think you should be told...
Raincoaster: our qualification is called "Journalism Studies" but it's about the most vocational qualification you can get.
ReplyDeleteAnother apple-shiner here. Cheers for popping down yesterday Iain. You mentioned in the lecture yesterday about a list of your 500 top blogs. I was wondering if that is available online? Also, would I be able to use a Doughty Street logo on my blog: owen-walker.blogspot.com. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteAh, you see, they'll go far. When that question arises (as it does on an annual basis) 'what's the point of media studies' the new hacks can all say 'no, no, I did journalism studies'.
ReplyDeleteSurely that's still studying the media?
Hope you told it like it is, Iain!
