Why I Now Love Vodafone

If you read THIS story yesterday you may have been given the impression that I hate Vodafone. The title of the post WHY I HATE VODAFONE was the clue. Today my faith has been restored.

I managed to buy a P990i at Charing Cross Station and got it for free. This afternoon has been spent trying in vain to sync my old phone to the laptop. No luck, so I phoned Vodafone expecting to be put through to a typical 'Computer Says No' person. As luck would have it I got put through to Duane, who has spent more than an hour helping me sync my old phone and then transfer all the data onto the new one. For anyone else thinking of buying a P990i you will also have to speak to Duane as Sony have cocked up on the sync coding. I won't bore you with the details but Duane is going to be a very busy boy if this phone proves popular.

Vodafone need more Duanes.

  1. Iain - we need more of this sort of incisive reportage. Keep it up.

  2. So how do you buy a free phone? It seems to me, phone users should be sent on mandatory competence courses.

    Politics need more Duanes.

    :-))

  3. Anyone who spends over an hour on the phone to a call centre agent clearly hasn't got enough to do.

  6. What sort of name is "Duane" ? No doubt he'd have no problems getting on to the A List.

  7. Mike Walsh, if only that were true in my case! I wanted to use my nw gadget!!!

Paul, it's very different to the P910. I haven't quite figured it out yet but when I do I will do a review.

    Jake the Peg, strangely not!

  8. When I found a mobile phone with buttons that my fingers fitted and made phone calls I stopped upgrading. I'm glad I did that...

  9. My point exactly. The customer does all the work in the new age. Vodaphone won you over by making you spend an hour on the phone. In more amiable times, a little man in a three quarter length brown duster coat wouild have come round to your house.

  10. It's a sad sad sign of the utter lack of regard and pathetically low levels of customer service in this country.

When it becomes a subject worthy of 2 entries into one of the best read blogs in the country.

Simply because a user actually gets the sort of service levels which should come as standard with any company.

  11. Buy a Windows phone, Iain. They sync first time. It seems that Sony and Nokia etc may do ok phones but none of them can write a matching Windows app to save their company.

  12. I must say Iain I was expecting to see a comment on the fact that the Tories and Labour are now on level pegging on Yougov. Project Cameron crashing on the runway Iain?
sorry off thread, but couldn't resist it.

  13. This has nothing to do with mobile phones but Iain just thought you might like to know that I distributed many copies of your blogging book at Labour Conference despite criticism that I'm promoting a Tory. What a star I am!

  14. Maybe Duane should be promoted to Vodaphone's main board - I bought their shares about 4 years ago and they are currently showing a loss of 18%, whereas the FTSE 100 index over the same period is up over 65%.

  15. Iain - you are SO easily bought!

  16. Why do many of your contributers sign Orange's praises? I left them for Vadafone a few years ago and have never looked back.

The trick with Vodafone, as you have discovered, is to find a shop you love. Mine's on Cannon Street- and they have their very own Duane there too.

While they seem to be going through the dol drums share wise at the moment, they are a decent company and will have their day again.

  17. How's the phone Iain? I've got my free upgrade coming up and seriously considering the P990 (to releave me of my tired old XDA Mini S)...
