Overheard in a supermarket, a wife saying to her husband...
"If you don't shut up, I won't iron your trackie bottoms ready for court on Monday..."*
Or his 'hoodie', no doubt.
* Courtesy of Radio 2's Stuart Maconie Show which I was forced to listen to in the car just now. Proof of middle age...
UPDATE: I'm doing the paper review on BBC News 24 tonight at 11.45pm with former Tory MP Michael Brown. Do tune in!
Does "44" really count as middle-aged these days, Iain?
ReplyDeleteJudges wear trackie bottoms now?! Grief, what is the world coming to...
ReplyDeleteOn the telly tonight 'Iscariot' Dale sells out his principled opposition to the BBC for fewer than 30 thirty pieces of silver.
ReplyDeleteWell, beats watching Match of the Day, and it'll be good practice for when he becomes an MP...
So deserving of a hug! Can someone call David Cameron?
ReplyDeleteI saw my local (Labour) MP doing his shopping in Tesco on Friday morning. In the past he did his shopping personally in the run up to elections. Does he know something ?

.....Dont be silly, NO Judge would have any idea what "trackie bottoms" are.
anonymous at 4.50. 30? I don't get out of bed for 30...
ReplyDeleteIain .... this is getting into a habit - do you really have nothing better to do late on a Saturday night? Sadly I don't either so I might watch.
ReplyDeleteTrackie bottoms - surely a shell suit would be much more appropriate - classy!
ReplyDeleteIt's a BBC plot. There you are viewers; all Tories are nancy-boys.
ReplyDeleteClive, sadly not. But you'd better get used to me on a Saturday night on News 24 - I'm for 5 out of the next 7 weeks!
ReplyDeleteSee if you can pursued Micheal Brown, just for once, NOT to start with a plug for "The Independent", but if he does for f sake plug this blog as well.
ReplyDeleteTry and mention the typhoon/hurricane tragedy in China. Point out that George W has had nothing to do with it and nature seems to kill in a Communist country - a fact ignored by the left-of-center media.
As a magistrate, I'd be astonished if any of our trackie bottom wearing 'customers' bothered to iron them in advance of a court appearance.
ReplyDeleteSounds made-up to me. Currently residing in our 'things you would like to hear' section.
ReplyDeleteSee if you can slip in the phrase:
ReplyDelete"Massey Ferguson Combine Harvester model 525"
without it sounding out of place.
Iain, this is the first banner colour that I haven't liked. It looks like a cross between khaki and institutional green.
ReplyDeleteI love all the others, and wondered whether you might not like to add a nice medium gray. Gray is a beautiful colour and would great on your banner, especially with the reverse white and the black comments on the right. Very smart!
Reading and writing posts in another place (as they say) has kept me up so late I might even watch it.
ReplyDeleteVerity thinks you have a middle-age attitude at 44, Iain. Don't worry too much; I'm now pushing 46 and thought the "tackie bottoms" and "court" comment was something to do with stockbrokers playing squash. The again, to me supermarket now = Waitrose.
ReplyDeleteYou've been demoted, you're not an MP anymore :-/
ReplyDeleteIain, as with oop norf I am deeply dissappointed to here of your demotion from Conservative MP.
ReplyDeleteAs for not getting out of bed for 30 pieces of silver, surely it depends on how big they are?
Last time I checked silver was £40 ish per troy ounce, so if it was 30 bars, taht would be quite a lot.
Obviously since Henry VIII our currency has been watered down in terms of intrinsic value, but silver is silver.

ReplyDeleteI don't mind being held to account, but don't make things up. Iain stated in his post that he'd listened to some programme on his car radio, which was "proof of middle age ..."
I asked Iain if "44" is considered middle aged these days. Don't come clumping on your hobnailed boots over my aperçus.
My wife and I were watching what turned out to be a very entertaining (in a "guilty pleasures" sort of way) Jackie Chan movie on BBC1.
ReplyDeleteAs I find your blog very amusing in places, I wanted to see what you looked and sounded like for the first time. So I especially sent my wife upstairs to watch the end of Jackie Chan (ooh missus) while I watched BBC News 24 downstairs at 11.45.
It was interesting to see you with Michael Brown - you made an .....interesting pair...especially when it came to commenting on the comparative torsoes of Cameron and Blair and the lady presenter (who is very capable by the way) had to rein you both in. Very funny.
I also think you wore an excellent jacket and tie combination. Too often we see grey or black jackets and boring ties. Especially in summer it is a pleasure to see a brighter and more informal combination like yours.
You covered some interesting points.
I also think you are most fortunate in your accent. Too many Conservative spokespeople have annoying posh accents. Your accent is beautifully flat and everyday - and therefore does not grate and is most welcome on the television or radio. You need to "um" and "err" and hesitate a bit less. You got better as it went on.
Unfortunately television is all about vision. That's why I have a great face for radio and would only be seen dead on TV if it was to impersonate an ugly light bulb. You looked absolutely knackered, especially when contrasted to Michael Brown who seemed to have accidentally swallowed a bottle of "ProPlus". I would suggest three hours sleep before your next appearance.
But otherwise I was glad I stayed up to at last see what you look like on one of your famous media tarting stints.
Sorry, was ironing my trackie bottoms. Next time I'll use my phone bill money to buy a TIVO.
ReplyDeleteSomeone help me here: If the life expectancy's 76, why is 44 not middle-aged?
Tone: for the record "Massey Ferguson Combine Harvester model 525" is a classic and, thus, never out of place.
Apologies to Verity, I didn't read the small print in Ian's piece carefully enough. Sadly I own neither hobnail boots nor trackie-bottoms, so any apercu damage is entirely due to the comfy slippers I wear as I potter about waiting for old age to start.
ReplyDeletetowcestarian - V elegant. The apology, not the slippers, about which I know nothing.
ReplyDeleteMmmm orange! What happened to the green??!! Thought it was rather fetching.
