Local Man Wins South Dorset Selection
Local non A-Lister Richard Drax has won through against two A List women in South Dorset tonight.
A quick Google search seems to show up a local BBC reporter in Dorset with the same name and also a local landowner who has been named by the Conservatives in the past on an entirely different issue... this is on North Dorset MP Bob Walter's site...
Before Parliament was dissolved for the 1992 election there were more Old Etonians than women in the lower house. With Dave's A List system obviously working so spectacularly, we can again look forward to more Old Etonians than women in the Commons. Anyone know, for reasons of overlap, Drax's age? (His full name is amazing by the way.)
Drax. Hmmm rings a bell. Wasn't he the baddie in 'Moonraker'? Stealing space shuttles and trying to infect the Earth with a deadly virus. Lucky 007 stopped him in time or it could have turned out nasty.
imdb - yes, you're right. Ian Fleming took the names of his Eton contemporaries for characters in his books - see also Blofeld. Blofelds (including Henry, the cricket bloke) and Draxes have gone to the school for generations.
And let us Cons, or do I mean cons (think Portland), in S Dorset, hope that all the officers of the local association, and all the councillors etc get behind the candidate, unlike the half hearted support from several for the candidate in 2005. It was a disgrace that the 'psychophantic bliarite' 'Jim' Knight was allowed to increase his majority.
Who cares if Drax et al went to Eton? I'd rather be governed by nobs & toffs than spivs & shysters. At least they have a sense of fairplay and humour whilst shafting us. It's no fun being shafted by humourless nerks.
Good for him - though I fear it will only encourage the 'Women-only Shortlist' tendency at CCHQ.
ReplyDeleteOld Etonian, I think, like Dave.
ReplyDeleteIs that the Richard Drax who owns half of Dorset?

Surely there can't be many Richard Draxes about?

ReplyDeleteDrax powers in, hey?
ReplyDeleteDave's travelling doll-show moves on to the next Toytown.
Almost worth moving to Weymouth to campaign against him.....
ReplyDeleteThat'll be the quituple-barrelled Richard Ranfurly-Plunkett-Ernle-Earl-DRAX.
ReplyDeleteBit hard to fit all that on the ballot sheet. And yes, they do own half of Dorset. Nice gaffe though: stayed there once.
