Tony McNulty: It Woz The Sun Wot Done It

So Tony McNulty has been made the sacrificial lamb for the Government's various immigration cock ups. He will have seen the writing on the wall when he saw his picture on the front page of The Sun today alongside the headline "Immigration Chief's Job On the Line". I wouldn't put it past John Reid to have leaked his move to The Sun yesterday. McNulty will now be responsible for Police reform and the new Minister of State in that job, Liam Byrne moves to take on immigration (after less than two weeks in the Police job). You can rearrange the deckchairs all you like, but it's the icebergs that need destroying. David Davis made a very pertinent comment tonight when he said that if Mr McNulty "is not good enough to run the immigration department, how will he be capable of running the police force?" On a personal level I feel for Tony McNulty as he's a bit of a mate. Although he's seen as a bit of a thug by many in my Party he's very good company and he will be feeling somewhat humiliated tonight. But obviously not enough to resign.

  1. As the South African nursery rhyme goes: "The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round. The wheels on the bus....."

But it's still heading for a cliff with a full load of passengers.

  3. How can you feel for any of these halfwits, Iain? They've deliberately flooded the UK with more than a million immigrants, most of them illegal, and for no other reason than to offer them an amnesty in order to secure hundreds of thousands of instant labour voters. McNulty and his party despise Britain and despise the British people. He should have his arse kicked back to whatever College of Furher Education he was teaching at.....sorry, I meant Further.

  4. Indeed, a sacrificial lamb to The Sun, Iain, but it's curious that you haven't taken up the more significant story of the day; the fact that Sun editor, Rebekah Wade invited David cameron and his wife to Beckham's prestigious charity do as her special guests.I'm glad Peter Oborne pointed it out in the Evening Standard.

  5. McNulty is married to the chief executive of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Christine Gilbert, CBE

Polytechnic Lecturer probably well-versed in sociological excuses for failure in a country where people crave some ever so small sign of success

  6. "Very good company"? He must have a different personality in private then, whenever I've seen him on the box I've thought he was a rude unpleasant and none-too-bright Government toady.

When he was on Newsnight recently it was put to him that issuing National Insurance cards like confetti without checking whether or not the recipient was legally entitled to be in the country wasn't a good idea. He (the Immigration Minister mind) said it "might be worth looking into"!

As you say Iain, humiliated but not enough to resign - do any of them ever resign for any reason whatever? So long as they can cling on to the gravy train that's all they care about. And they wonder why the public despise politicians..........

  7. The real story here is surely the rapid promotion of Liam Byrne to what is virtually Deputy Home Secretary. Not only is he now in charge of immigration but is also responsible for delivery across the whole department.

There is now talk of the Home Office getting a second Cabinet minister as an alternative to splitting the department up. What's the betting it will be Byrne?

  8. Because of everything else that has been going on in the Home Office the 'police reform' agenda has not been in the spotlight. McNulty has a heck of time ahead of him.
