It's Not Just Cherie Who Should Apologise

Alastair Campbell's partner Fiona Millar, who used to work as Cherie Blair's PA, has been all over the media urging her former employer to apologise for signing the autioned copy of the Hutton Report. But amazingly no journalist has asked her whether her partner should also do the same. He has been uncharacteristically silent on the matter, yet it was he more than anyone, who was to blame for the circumstances which led Dr Kelly to take his life. And he signed more than one copy, so you can hardly put it down to a rush of blood. Cherie Blair's actions are ill-judged, but Alastair Campbell's are downright disgusting and reprehensible. I suppose we shouldn't really be surprised. My only consolation is that the value of his diaries is diminshing with every day that Tony Blair stays in power.

  1. Campbell was at Downing street yesterday with the rest of the football players who are playing in the soccer aid match on saturday (raising money for UNICEF). It was a nice little photo opportunity for Blair. I wonder if Campbell didn't have a little hand in organising it for his former master...

  2. I'll tell you why. Because Campbell still has influence and many hacks fear his physical presence not to mention that foul mouth and poison tongue. He is the Maxwell of journalism and Blair's reliance on him says much about Blair's morals. Matthew Parris(apart from yourself) has always had his number. Campbell is a whore.

  3. ...which reminds me: wasn't the fragrant Fiona fingered at one point as the source of the original leak in Hutton's whitewash pail? Thus allowing Ali to state categorically that it wasn't him. Ill-informed and libellous speculation, of course.

  4. Couldn't agree more Iain. It's truly bizarre that no one is pointing out the Fiona Millar/Campbell connection in the story. Hell, when I told my wife what Millar said yestedray even she said "but that's Campbell's partner isn't it?" and she hates politics.

  5. Demanding apologies?
It may come to demands for more than that. See:

This could get very interesting indeed, especially if you happen to enjoy following a conspiracy theory that has the capacity to either:
    a) cause an outbreak of sweaty underpants among those whose 'omnipotence' is failing and may now be called to account for past misdeeds,
    or
    b) will irritate them intensely because although there may be no case to answer no one will believe them anyway.

    I love indoor blood sports.

  6. Ian writes: "yet it was he more than anyone, who was to blame for the circumstances which led Dr Kelly to take his life" - if indeed he did.

  7. Why shouldn't Alistair Campbell sign the report? It's quite usual, isn't it, for an author to autograph his own book?
