New England Coach is a Homophobic Bigot

The Football Association launched a very laudable campaign a few months ago to kick homophobia out of football. So committed to this campaign are they, that they are about to appoint a confirmed homophobic bigot as Sven's replacement. Step forward Mr Scolari. He is on the record as saying that if he found out one of his players was gay he'd immediately drop him. Well that's at least two England careers over then. I have no doubt Scolari is a great coach and has impeccable international credentials, but what on earth was wrong with Martin O'Neill? He'd have been superb.

  1. Iain, you're making 3 serious allegations there.

I'll ignore the England footballers but do you have a reference for Scolari's comments?

  2. It's been on Sky News all afternoon.

  3. I don't know what O'Neill's views are on homosexuality so I will confine my comments to his qualities as a football manager. Errrm, what exactly are they? He kept Leicester City in the Premier League with a team of kick and rush merchants, whilst championing the qualities of the useless bag of shite that is Emile Heskey... and he won a two horse race in Scotland whilst the proddies were skint. errm... that's it! He certainly talks a good talk, but its mostly blarney. If O'Neill, why not strachan? Equally ill equipped.

  4. I'm not sure why the strong push for O'Neill. He won some stuff with Celtic in a two team league and got Leicester promoted.

I was worried about all the British choices on offer.Scolari has at least won trophies on the international stage, what else matters?

NOte: Winning in Scotland with an Old Form club does not count as "something"

  6. Why is it that anyone who disagrees with your perspective is a 'bigot'?

Is not is simply a derogatory term banded around when someone has an opinion contrary to one's own?

  7. Cranmer, I would have thought it was obivous. If someone says they won;t have a gay footballer in their team I would say that was bigoted, wouldn't you?

  8. Well, I have not heard him say this. It should, of course, simply be a question of ability.

Bigotry is rife in many quarters, Mr Dale, including (as I'm sure you're aware) in the gay community. I am (of course) more familiar with it in religious circles, where one is simply called a 'bigot' for voicing an opinion contrary to the orthodoxy of 'the other side'.

  9. Woody... Big Fat Ron won the League Cup Final... and he scored pretty high on the bigot scales too. Oh yes, he's English as well. So, is he your choice? Beating Tranmere Rovers and Middlesborough in a League Cup final? Wow!!

  10. If Scolari can win the World Cup for England I don't care whether he had Pol Pot round for tea

  11. Woody... he does...on..and on...and on he does. All about how good he is for creating a middle of the road English League team... like Big Ron! Bloody hell, even McLaren has now got to a European final.. and not with a club with a 60,000 home gate every other week. I'm pissed with all these English managers saying they could have got Brazil to a world Cup Final. I wonder why they've never been asked?
