Conservative Supporting Celebrities
In an idle moment tonight I was thinking of a few celebrities who support the Tories. Kirstie Allsop and Phil Spencer from Location, Location, Location have apparently come out of the closet, and I suspect there will be a lot more. It's not as if knowing that Matt Jay from Busted (pic above) votes Conservative will persuade anyone else to, but the press always seem to rate the success of a political party by the number of famous people who will openly support it. Here's a list of celebrities and sportspeople I know to be Tory supporters. Tell me of others in the Comment section.
Kirstie Allsop, Glynis Barber, Cilla Black, Michael Brandon, Errol Brown, Janet Brown, Frank Bruno, Judith Chalmers, Joan Collins, Ronnie Corbett, Paul Daniels, Jim Davidson, Ken Dodd, Lynsey de Paul, Julian Fellowes, Bryan Ferry, Freddie Forsyth, James Gaddas, Tony Hadley, Nicky Haslam, Matt Jay, Nanette Newman, Bruce Oldfield, Zandra Rhodes, Anneka Rice, Tim Rice, Phil Spencer, Peter Stringfellow, Jimmy Tarbuck, Marco Pierre White, Anthony Worral Thompson, Bill Wyman
Neil Adams, Mark Bosnich, Ian Botham, Trevor Brooking, Bob Champion, Tony Cottee, Garth Crooks, Susanne Dando, Steve Davis, Nick Faldo, Graham Gooch, Jimmy Greaves, Brian Jacks, Clive Lloyd, Terry Neil, Fred Trueman
So desperate for celebreties, Jim Davidson even gets in twice! Also clinging to straws on the 'sports celebrity' front. Just exactly who, apart from the veteran Steve Davis, has actually done anything in the last decade or so?
ReplyDeletePS - I like the new layout, it looks very clean, although the type is too small for the likes of me, Bill Wyman and Jimmy Greaves to read!
Bill Roache
ReplyDeleteMark Bosnich? Did he go to the same parties as DC, hehehehe
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of ****s - the very worst of British "light entertainment"
Didn't Phil Collins threaten to leave the country if the tories lost the election? That inspired me to vote Labour.
ReplyDeleteAh..I actually think it was the posh boy from Busted who came out as a Tory first... then the others just nodded in agreement!
ReplyDeleteCharlie I think his name is. I actually was in Bournmouth for the Conference at the time and rushed out to buy their album. Just because of what they said.
I'm sad like that
I forget who it was but one famous rock star was asked in an interview years ago what his political leanings were.
ReplyDeleteHe replied,
"My heart is Labour, my head is Liberal but my money is definitely Conservative."
(it may have been Mick Jagger)
I'm visualising "dave" at his first Cool Britannia party at No 10 surounded by that freak show...
ReplyDeleteNow the Lib Dems.. with Claire Raynor and Nicholas Parsons how can we fail ?
I have had a "slow burn" growth in almost teen-like absurd infatuation with both Kirsty AND Phil over the last few years and have at times felt that the only programme that gets me through the winter is the emotional rollercoaster mixed with property porn that is Location, etc. So I was very pleased to read Kirsty Allsop's anti-government comments, particularly over something as dreadful as the seller's pack.
ReplyDeleteIs this list really meant to portray the Tories as a prgressive, forward looking party? Can't wait until the News Quiz panel gets hold of it!
ReplyDeletePS - Think the new layout is excellent - though the picture of you with the book is a little scary!
Phil Collins offered to come *back* if the Tories won, I think...
ReplyDeleteCould you post in here telling us who half the first list *are*, please Iain?!
The Tories are always going to have lots of celebrity endorses, because they are the party of the rich.
ReplyDeleteAnd celebrities, by and large, are loaded!
Phil & Kirstie - hardly a surprise with their diet of patronising drivel for the wanmnabe propertied classes. Give them a chance and I'd bet they would vote to return the franchise only to people who had been clients of theirs...:)
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Mark "Nazi salute" Bosnich isn't on the Cameron wing of the party...
ReplyDeleteNeil Adams from Norwich city??? You can't be serious! Please tell me it aint so...
ReplyDeleteIs my memory right that Glen Hoddle was inspired by mystic forces to back the blues from his Ascot pad?
ReplyDeleteThink he means Neil Adams the judo Olympic medallist and wife-beater...
ReplyDeleteIain, your list is astounding. Rich people (mostly naff) from Essex have a propensity to support the Conservatives. Who woulda thunk it?
Isn't Lumley a LD? And Anita Roddick, and Toksvig, and the Pet Shop Boys, and Brian Eno, and John Cleese...we have a few celebs, although a load a failures too....
ReplyDeleteBut then I see you have Paul Daniels and I think how lucky I am to be a LD member.
Wasn't Kirsty from location, location, location Dad/Grandfather a Liberal peer?
ReplyDeleteOr maybe two of my sexual fantasies have got mixed up.
Adam Rickett, Ester Mcvey, Tim Vincent
ReplyDeleteThe Conservatives had loads of "celebrities" on the platform during their Culture session at the 2000 Party Conference. Most were a bit ancient, though. They included, as I recall, DJs Mike Read and Ed Stewart, newsreader Jan Leeming and a woman who used to be in Brotherhood of Man.
ReplyDeleteCelebrities used to be much in evidence, of course, at General Election rallies, notably in 1983 when Kenny Everett made some notorious remarks. By 1997, the only celebs I recall were Duncan Goodhew and singer Michael Ball.
I have memorised off by heart a letter I read in the Daily Mail in the late 90s. I must say that I give the letters editor credit for printing - no doubt for pure comedy value. It read:
ReplyDelete------
Sir,
So I see Labour have unrepentant, convicted terrorist, Nelson Mandela, at their conference while the Conservatives have British patriot, Jim Davidson, at theirs.
Says it all.
Yours sincerely,
------
In a way, it was true.
Reads like a Royal Variety performance or celebrity golf tournament.
ReplyDeleteHowever... the Busted chappy did later state that he had been misrepresented and does not actively support the Tory party. This is easy for you to find Iain and I suggest you amend the article rather than misrepresent his non-position.
So desperate for celebreties, Jim Davidson even gets in twice! Also clinging to straws on the 'sports celebrity' front.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more.
Kenney Jones (former drummer with Small Faces, Faces and the Who) is a lifelong Tory, I believe.
ReplyDeleteRoger Daltrey and (the late) John Entwistle of the latter band both made Tory-endorsing comments in 1979.
Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) voted Tory in 1979.
Rick Wakeman (ex-Yes)wanted to become a Tory MEP, didn't he?
So...a few people with some artistic credibility. Just a shame they're all rich bastard rock stars!
Makes me so angry to see these super rich "so called celebrities" supporting the Tories. They're so worried, they think Labour wants to get their hands on their millions. Some seem to have forgotten where they came from!!!
ReplyDeleteSo having pots of money seems to turn you into a Tory????
The still gorgeous Carol Vorderman is well known as a lifelong Tory supporter and so was her late 'Countdown' co-host Richard Whiteley. He was actually attending the 1984 Conservative Party Conference when the brighton bomb went off and, therefore, the first reporter on the scene.
ReplyDeleteHere are some other british celebrities who are well known to have Tory sympathies:
ReplyDeleteCarol Smillie,Anne robinson,Claire Sweeney,Jenna Russell,Denise Van Outen,Roger Moore,Lulu,Claire King,Kylie Minogue,Lisa Stansfield and Gloria Hunniford.
As an activist who canvassed Carol Vordeman in 1992 I can confirm that she was planning to vote Lib Dem
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, it's great to have a list of such scum to steer well clear of! Reads like a reject list for 'Celebrity Kettle Swap'! I'll be sure and give Kirsty Allsop some abuse when I see her next.
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing out the Tory Toffs. I cannot stand anyone who comes from a working class background, did well for themselves, undoubtedly at the cost of those around them, and then look down their noses at the great 'unwashed ', dictating to them how wonderful the Conservative Party is. Pity that the lessons of the 1980's, and that an ever growing number of voters weren't even born then, has led us to where we are today. Hate to say I told you so.
