Another Senior Tory to Step Down at Next Election

I understand that the chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Michael Spicer has announced that he will be standing down from Parliament at the next election. Sir Michael was first elected in February 1974 and sits for Worcestershire West.

  1. Worcs West - perhaps not the safest berth for an aspirant Tory PPC

  2. Worcestershire West is a Con/LD marginal, where the Lib Dems really are too close for comfort. Hopefully a big national swing to the Tories at the next election will result in the Con majority increasing substantially.

  3. Another good Conservative calling time, and here was I hoping it would be K.Clarke.

  4. All those application forms Iain! You will get writer's cramp if you are not careful.

One word of advice I would give you based on my experience of the recruitment process is buy a decent fountain pen - these people are not all that impressed by felt tip or green biro. There you go - those words of wisdom come at no extra charge.

  5. Hmm, hadn't noticed it was marginal. One of the better Lib Dem results against the Tories last year too. Could be at risk with Spicer standing down although wise of him to give plenty of notice to allow the Tory candidate to bed in. Still pretty attractive for an aspirant Tory though - surviving the first election would be a major test but you would surely hope to consolidate with incumbancy.

  6. Sometimes an incumbent retiring can produce a positive result - I wouldn't be surprised to see the Tory majority in West. Worcs go up at the next election.

  7. Excellent news, I look forward to welcoming West Worcestershire into the Liberal Democrat fold. We would have had it already if it wasn't for Spicer's personal vote.
