Put the Mellorphant Man Out to Pasture
Am I alone in failing to understand why national newspapers continue to provide an opportunity for David Mellor to tell us his thoughts on the state of politics and sport? I don't know what he's got on the editor of the Evening Standard but it must be something pretty special for her to continue to allow him to write page after page of bilge. I don't know anyone in politics who takes his vews seriously and there certainly aren't many in football who have any yearning at all to hear what he thinks about the nation's favourite sport. In yesterday's Standard he railed against David Cameron for having the temerity to take paternity leave - a subject I would have thought he would do well to steer well clear of. Memo to Vernonica Wadley, editor of the Evening Standard. Do your readers a favour and put the Mellorphant Man out to pasture. And while you're about it, do the same with Will Self.

It had to be said, you said it. People have for years, nay now almost for decades, opened their Evening Standard or sometimes even put on their TVs and cried as one "why would anyone want to listen to this opinionated arrogant man". Of course, if the same standards were applied throughout the media, we would probably read empty newspaper pages, watch blank TV screens, and listen to silent radio broadcasts.
David Mellor was actually standing in for Will Self yesterday.
It really is a case of where to start with the Stunted's use of novelists as 'Will this do?' commentators? The Jeanette Winterson column is particularly bad.
hear hear......sound
more importantly on this columnist assassination page why don't we get rid of David Aaranovitch in the times too. his opinion page is cack
I'm sorry Iain, if there is to be a shooting of Evening Standard columnistst againts the wall then Victor Lewis Smith has to be first. The man stopped being funny some years ago.
The entire commentariat class are odious, self-propagating, nobodies. Unfortunately, it appears, in journalism you are what you say you are so long as somebody believes you....
I want to dissent loudly from Hamish's view that Victor Lewis Smith "stopped being funny some years ago". Completely untrue. Victor Lewis Smith has NEVER been funny.
(Pause - speaking slowly to ensure understanding) That - is - why - he - writes - for - the - Standard.
Hear, hear - Mellor is an ugly, unpleasant little man who is pleased with himself because he thinks he has married 'up'.
Will Self - self says it all - self opinionated, self satisfied. Send him back to Islington and double quick!
Victor Lewis-Smith stopped being funny when his hairstyle stopped being trendy.
We are going to off the local rags' columnists...?
Liz Jones!! Liz Jones!!
The woman is nothing but parody
Oh, God, Liz Jones, how could I forget? Desperate fashion victim who bought her self a husband and couldn't understand why he didn't behave like on of those mutant puppies that women of her ilk carry around. She needs some serious time working with people with real problems and meet a REAL woman, Camilla Batmanghelidjh of Kids Company who will show her the error of her ways, and who would do so with more love and compassion that the skinny little latte sipping neurotic deserves.
On the same page he actually referred to Sophie Raworth, possibly the most beautiful woman on television, as "homely" - clearly the man has no taste!
