Today is the thirtieth anniversary of Margaret Thatcher's election as leader of the Conservative Party. I was twelve at the time but remember it well. I remember running upstairs to tell my Grandmother who was ill in bed. She burst into tears. She couldn't believe that it was ossible for a woman to lead a political party. My Grandmother was a bit of feminist at heart, but a deep rooted Tory. She sparked my interest in politics. She would have been 109 today!

ReplyDeleteThats a nice story Iain.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I also know alot of people who would cry at the thought of Thatcher being the PM!
I'm sure you do, but one day they will see the error of their ways!
ReplyDeleteYou are too young and inexperienced to remember but Mrs Thatcher destroyed the industrial base in this country, spent billions of revenue from North sea oil and gas on paying the millions that she put on the dole. She did a lot of useful things but mostly she caused damage which we are still recovering from. It is thatcherist dogma that led to hospital cleaning being undertaken by profit driven contractors using underpaid workers and with no responsibility and accountability lesding to dirty hospitals and people dying.
