Arise Lord Lord

The long awaited list of new working peers has just been announced on the Number 10 website.

Looking down the Tory list there are a number of names which will bring on a few cheers within the party, especially the wonderful Alistair Cooke, who is the Tory Party equivalent of a national treasure. I would also congratulate Richard Spring, Sir Patrick Cormack, Michael Dobbs and Anne Jenkin, who I would all count as friends. I'm also pleased to see Howard Flight on the list as he was appallingly treated back in 2005.

My one negative comment on the list is that it contains a number of names who I just can't see turning up much. Does anyone seriously think Michael Grade will turn up for votes?

And an amusing conundrum for the former Deputy Speaker of the Commons Michael Lord. Does he now become Lord Lord? :)

  2. Per Number 10 website

"•Anne Jenkin – charitable and political work for the Conservative Party"

Since when has the Conservative Party engaged in charitable work?

Perhaps some of the image consultants could do a bit of proof reading?

  4. I hope that Sir Michael lives in St John's Wood. Then he could be Lord Lord of Lords.

  5. Richard Spring - is he the one who was once known as "Bed" Spring in connection with a tabloid story the details of which now escape me?

None of them should be turning up for votes. WE should get to vote on who turns up for votes.

  7. Magnificent news indeed about Howard Flight. What a profound loss he was to the Tories' front-bench, and what an uncharacteristically knuckle-headed decision by Michael Howard.

Howard Flight is one of the brightest and the best, as well as being an immensely nice bloke. It's fantastic news that he will (however belatedly) be strengthening the party's presence in the Lords.

  8. Iain Dale - hearing you on Sky. All I can say is thank god you are not an MP.

You have made yourself look like an utter pratt! Typical same old tories attitude and thats the perception from someone who is a small c conservative. God knows what the non conservatives will think of you.

You just don't say such things especially when they are only partially true and applicable to only to a portion of the population. Young has clearly been living in cloud cuckooland.

Now in future you might want to keep your 'Angry from Tunbridge Wells' views to yourself.

If Cameron gets this then why can't you.......

  9. Looking over the list of new peers, I, as normal recognise few of them, and feel even fewer merit any award. These awards, I assume are in our name, but I don't feel being an MP, a Minister, a bag carrier, a political contributer, a friend of friends, a "celebrity", a charity donator to your own charity, etc, merit titles in our name.

I'm fed up with the whole honours scam.

    Derek.
