David Cameron this afternoon launched a national petition calling for an early general election. If you'd like to sign it click HERE.
I wasn't convinced of the benefits of an early election until today. But I think public anger is at such a level that it may be the only way it can be assuaged. I'll be debating the issue with Jessica Asato from Progress on 5 Live Breakfast tomorrow morning at 8.05am. She, naturally, would rather stick needles in her eyes than have an election.

Perhaps Cameron should make it more widely available and perhaps downloadable for printing and distributing.

What a waste of time. Do you think Brown is going to say "Ooh, I see that the Conservatives are calling for a general election: better give them one then"? The leech is going to cling on until May 2010. Cameron would do better to push for that fat pig Martin to oink off.

ReplyDeleteYou don't get it do you - A Ge in say June/july/august or septemeber gives the parties enough time to get rid of the fat pigs and get rid of Speaker Martin. Both are as important as the other in executing. At the moment there are MPs who are cashing in each month with Mp salaries plus Pension contributions.
A dissolution of parliament is the only way to stop the troughing and get a cleaner politics.

No election whilst the troughers are in situ....unless Dave wants to throw away seats hand over fist......mackay, kirkbride, hogg, duncan and another dozen others should all be deselected and clean candidates put in place......

Labour made this expensive MP enrichment scheme post 1997. It was built on something that was meant to assist memebers.
When Cabinet members make money at the tax payers expense by claiming 50% more than they pay for council tax you really see that Labour are in it all for themselves!

If you vote UKIP in the European Elections you will make it more likely that they come ahead of New Labour which makes Gordon's position untenable.

ReplyDeleteMuch as I want to see the back of Brown and his dreadful government at the earliest opportunity I think the next government would be hamstrung from the start if they start off with people like Julie Kirkbride amongst the ranks of backbenchers. Time is needed to deselect the wrongdoers and to appoint new prospective MP's so I am unable to sign this petition at this stage.

Then there is the Liberal Democrat £2 Million plus loan that Michael Brown stole from investors.
Labour have left their cabinet sleaze balls in place and the Labour MPs caught claiming for non-existant mortgages are still drawing their salary.
A dissolution is the only way to clean the pigs out of the sty!
Surely we all want the crooks to be deselected first before we have an election.

The current petition on the No10 site has shown that it is useless as a vehicle for mass numbers. At the fastest rate it ever showed, of 10k a day, it would take 1 year to reach 3M votes.

Is this a precedent? Because I'm sure we would have had hundreds of thousands of signatures requiring a dissolution of Parliament in April 1990 when the Poll Tax started.
ReplyDeletePerhaps David Cameron can tell us what the threshold is before he will say that the people have demanded a dissolution and so the Prime Minister would oblige. Then he would be bound by the same threshold if he were to be Prime Minister, would he not?
Not a lot of point if we have only the same candidates to vote for.

ReplyDeleteSince Cameron has without doubt broken the expenses rules, why is his party not taking action against him? Until he can explain how wisteria impedes his parliamentary duties, Cameron does not deserve an election, and he certainly does not deserve to win it. Unfortunately, unlike the Labour Party which seems to be taking a central line of deselection for those who've broken the rules, the Tories appear to be leaving it to Cameron and the Associations - which makes his position rather more secure than it should be! Why has he not yet called for any deselections - and why not his own?!

ReplyDeleteWell at least Iain Dale shows his traditional political consistency by arguing for snap elections to "solve" political crises but only, of course, when the Tories are not in power.
ReplyDeleteWhat would have happened had such a snap election been held as a result of political crisis following Argentina invading the Falklands? I think we may have found that the Blessed Margaret's political career might have been a mere coda between two very socialist Labour Governments.
What possible consistency could there be between Iain's opportunistic calling for snap general elections now and his previous "campaign" for fixed term parliaments? None at all.
But next week, all of this would have been ludicrous posturing will have been forgotten, except by those few of us with memories longer than the average goldfish.
