Dizzy exposes the nasty, disgusting face of the left, and so-called comedian Mark Thomas in particular. Apparently he is encouraging people to send postcards to the Queen - or Elizabeth Windsor, as he calls her - to tell her how they will celebrate the death of Margaret Thatcher. And to think, I used to think Mark Thomas was quite funny. He's sick.

Well, Lady T has has worse and far wittier insults thrown at her over the years, not to mention the odd bomb. I imagine she will pay this scant regard. It doesn't excuse Thomas, of course, who likes to think of himself as the scourge of the arms trade. What kind of humanitarian would celebrate the death of a human being?

ReplyDeleteBut talking about the Queen, perhaps she is the only person above all this mess. I know that politically she cannot act (as constitutional monarch) but this may be the only way forward to give some moral direction to our discredited governing elites.
It would be very easy to play up to this man's actions, but yeah, leave him to his games. I used to find him quite interesting and funny but this is beyond reasonable behaviour.

I think this demonstrates the polarising effect that Thatcher continues to have on society. There are those on the left who will never forgive her for what they perceive as her cruelty to them and their kind.
ReplyDeleteWhilst I was no great fan as a young man, I now see that it is because of Thatcher that I am free to make piles of cash. She changed society for the better.
So, I won't be sending that postcard to Liz, but I might just send her one asking her to get rid of Brown...

Not at all surprised, Iain. I first saw Mark Thomas perform live at my university in 1988. Part of his act was to laugh about Conservatives being blown up by the IRA at the 1984 Conference. Not at all funny, of course, given the dreadful injuries and suffering endured by decent innocent people. I was sickened that anyone could find this amusing, but a large proportion of the anti-Thatcher audience thought it was hilarious, even though none of them would be ever likely to do so much for their country as the bomb victims.

In may ways, though, he is representative of a significant part of the left. Deluded middle-class leftie student-types seem to love him, to demonstrate how right-on and in touch with te "working class" they supposedly are.

Mark Thomas has never been funny. He was always a very poor Ben Elton impersonator ( a la 1989). And by all respects pretty much irrelevant these days.

ReplyDeleteDave, The post I wrote on Jack Jones was not disrespectful in any way. Indeed, I paid tribute to his work for pensioners. I did critique his work as a trade union leader. I have no problem with people criticising Margaret Thatcher's political legacy following her death. What I do have a problem with is hate filled comments. You cannot possibly compare my blogpost about Jack Jones with this.

Mark Thomas can be very funny but there has always been a deeply unwholesome whiff about him. He's so convinced of his sense of moral virtue that he lacks any restraint. A Righteous Beserker in fact.

He's got "Draper Syndrome" a very extreme form of chip on the shoulder mentality where by demonisation of your opponents, seeing them as "enemies" only serves to fuel a cycle of neurotic aggression and resentment.

In the past I have been a big fan of Mark Thomas, and though I may not agree with his politics, he has done some good work in the field of investigative journalism. This stunt, however, is sick.

I disagree with "Anonymous", saying we should "calm down". Stunts like this make people very angry and we should express our collective outrage.

ReplyDeleteThe context is that if Mrs T gets a state funeral it will be disrupted. State funerals are presumably granted by Lizzie Windsor, and a lot of people do not think it would be appropriate for Thatcher.
Yes, it's driven by spite but I tend to agree that Mrs T should not receive a state funeral; do you really think politicians should be afforded such an honour, or Mrs T in particular (why not Blair, or Brown or any other PM?).
This doesn't surprise me at all; there is a particular type of Labour supporter who sees all the problems of the present day as stemming from Thatcher (as they are wont to refer to her). I was delivering soup to a vegan supermarket in the Manchester area, and when I offered the delivery note and asked the chap receiving the goods to "sign for his expenses"

ReplyDeleteIt is a fact that her policies brought the misery of longterm unemployment to millions, and it can be argued wrecked the social fabric of large parts of the industrial uk.
Many hold her policies were necessary to the future economic success of this country.
However asking the 'Victims' of her economic policy to use their taxes to honour her in death could be considered as adding insult to injury.
To the working population of many towns I can think of Mr Thomas's antics would be considered restrained.
Perhaps those who want her to have one should pay from their own purses for it?

Thatcher was a divisive figure and she was no saint. I for one wouldn't wish her any harm, but I don't think she deserves a state funeral.
ReplyDeleteMy main objection to her is nothing to do with the miners' strike or her economic and social reforms, but to the way she gave her sleazy son a leg up into the arms trade and then secured him a knighthood (via his father).
I think Mark's stand is inspirational. Thatcher deserves a pauper's grave just like the one she sent thousands of working class people to.
