Gordon Brown to Meet George Clooney

"If I thought the future of politics was just about celebrity or something more substantial, I wouldn't be in politics. If being in public life becomes about image above all else then I don't believe politics would be serving the public."
25 September 2006
Labour Party Conference speech

"I'm not going to do something that I'm not simply to get attention. I think celebrity in the modern world is just like someone who walks into a room and says 'what do people want to hear and I'll tell them?'"
19 January 2007
BBC R4, Today

"I think we're moving from this period when, if you like, celebrity matters, when people have become famous for being famous. I think you can see that in other countries too - people are moving away from that to what lies behind the character and the personality."

"As a politician I have never sought the public eye for its own sake. I have never believed presentation should be a substitute for policy. I do not believe politics is about celebrity. When you put yourself forward for leadership, the country has a right to know where you come from, what you believe in and what you want to achieve."

  1. George probably wanted a role in his next Mr Bean movie.

  3. Hmmmmm.....

    Clooney & The Looney.

I bet Clooney will pull out when he realises

  4. Brown might be working on the premise that if you ain't got it then stand next to it and smile - people might still associate you with it.

  5. This is a cheap shot - George Clooney is far more than just a 'celebrity' airhead. As well as being an actor he is an accomplished director, and does a lot of work with the UN and many charities as well.

  6. Why on earth would Gordon Brown want to meet a sexy male Hollywood star, I just can't work it out.

  7. Shame on you Iain. George Clooney is a very active Human Rights campaigner.

  8. Whose stupid idea was it to put GB next to GC- a man of intelligence, charisma and supreme good looks? Made Gb look even more dull and sallow than usual.
Yes it was for a valid cause, and Clooney has done some good and committed work on Darfur, but GB's press team really should have though the whole photos thing through...

    "I'm a conviction politician."

"I believe in an ethical foreign policy."

    "British jobs for british workers."

  10. Gordon did look like the cat who'd got the cream.

    Teensy-weensy bit jealous?

  11. Perhaps our leader just wants George to recommend the name of a good make up artist who may be able to evenly apply the orange.

  12. Could be swoony over Clooney.

Various Anonymi have pointed out that Cloony has done work for the UN and works on behalf of "human rights".

So. Another Barbra Streisand, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover, Morgan Freeman flaming Hollywood lefty, then.

Why would he want his picture taken with an unelected prime minister who won't be stopping long in Downing St anyway?

  13. Verity said ...."Why would he want his picture taken with an unelected prime minister who won't be stopping long in Downing St anyway?"

Many people were pleased to have their photograph taken with the unelected Winston Churchill during WW2. Also, to some extent, with the similarly unelected John Major in 1990-92.

  14. "celebrity matters"

Yes, to shallow idiots. Why we should pay attention to ego driven Hollyweird types is beyond me.

As for the poster who compares GB to the "unelected" Churchill, that is so vacuous as to defy explanation.

  15. "As for the poster who compares GB to the "unelected" Churchill, that is so vacuous as to defy explanation."

The explanation is that it was a response to Verity's slur on Brown as being "unelected".

  16. "Verity's slur on Brown as being "unelected"."

Not a slur, the simple truth. Brown has never won an election as leader of the Labour party, and never will.
