In at the Deep End
This lunchtime I'm recording the first edition of Confronting Heffer for Telegraph TV. The idea is that I challenge him on the contents of his Wednesday column. The trouble is that I am at a bit of a disadvantage as I don't know what the subject is yet, and he will only just have finished writing it at midday. Nothing like being chucked in at the deep end, is there?

Well, he'll either mention Dave in his column or he won't. If he hasn't you can accuse him of bottling because of the program. or, if he has mentioned him, he'll either have been critical, in which case you can accuse him of letting the side down, or he'll have been complimentary, in which case you can accuse him of bottling because of the program.
Easy really.
Well, the obvious solution is to play the man and not the ball.
Oh let's have a go at predicting that he'll knock Cameron for not being tough enough on Hain, he'll knock Osborne about the office-support donations, he'll bash everything the Opposition is doing or isn't doing, and praise the Prime Minister for being a serious and heavy-weight politician.
On this first one you could easily use the well-established line that Heffer takes, and challenge him on that.
I used to like his view, but soon tired of it. Tell him he needs to be more constructive, more Telegraph and MUCH LESS Daily Mail.

Alan Douglas - "Tell him he needs to be more constructive, more Telegraph and MUCH LESS Daily Mail."
As you know so much about what readers want and what makes a readable column, why not become a celebrated, well-compensated national columnist yourself?
I don't know what the subject is yet, and he will only just have finished writing it at midday.
By then maybe he will know, too.
Any truth in the rumour that Heffer is secretly sponsored by a manufacturer of blood-pressure tablets? He certainly has an adverse effect on my bp! (But I read the column all the same ....)
Quite enjoyed watching this being filmed. As my desk is next to the studios in the Telegraph newsroom..
though no sound from where i was!
