"There is one thing the Europeans do rather better than we do. The lack of drinking at lunchtimes in this country is appalling" - Nigel Farage, MEP, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party.
"David Cameron's parting is first on the right, then effortlessly on the left, then nowhere at all. In other words, all over the place, wherever it suits on that day. So clearly it is following his deepest convictions" - Writer Frederick Forsyth.
"I am one of 12 and folks would ask if Mom and Dad were Catholics. I'd say, nope, just horny hillbillies" - Dolly Parton.
"I do not consider myself to be completely French, more European. A bit like Tony Blair, perhaps, who is not entirely English, in my opinion" - French actor Gerard Depardieu.
"The obsession with targets and the enforcers appointed to set and monitor them are not all that different from systems in the old Soviet Union" - Tory peer Lord Deedes, on the state of the National Health Service.

"Is Diane Abbott a gobshite who will say anything to please the Tories?"
The Pope (or was it a bear in the woods?)
This must be the most perceptive statement by any UKIP member since the party's formation!
except Boris..... blameless Boris?!
"Tony Blair, perhaps, who is not entirely English, in my opinion"
Is that meant to make those of us who are wholly English feel better
Blair is Scottish.
Admirable actor though M.Depardieu is, Tony Blair is not English- he was born in Edinburgh - not that Auld Reekie uses that in its tourist brochures
I'm not surprised Depardieu is confused about Blair's nationality, since our alleged PM changes his nationality and religion as the wind blows. When in Ireland he claimed to be an Irish Catholic, apparently, though he's a Prebsie Scot when in Scotland. Yet he's an English C of E when it suits him. Blair also claims to be an avid reader of the Qur'an - has he claimed to be of Islamic descent yet? Wouldn't surprise me - nor would I be at all surprised to learn he claims to have American ancestors when he's in US.

Are you kidding? Of course Tone has American ancestors, but, frankly, they would be Native Americans. These would be politically correct familiar connections, manufactured with the same industry that their membership in CND has been brushed out, with the tribes. They would discover a connection to a tribe - preferably one of the brighter tribes - like the Iroquois or the Sioux ... (who would disown them,of course; they're not stupid).
I therefore feel drawn to the idea that Tone and the Crone should visit that glass platform on the Grand Canyon. They've already connected with the Mayas and "rebirthing" covered in papaya pulp through a plastic tube ceremonies.
In the name of The Great Spirit, maybe they should visit that glass platform, with surprisingly low walls, over the Grand Canyon.
I'm not sayin' nuffink.

Having worked in the City, that is not my impression at all. Get out more, Nigel!
Tone, a Scottish public schoolboy, has as good a cliam to being Scots as English. British, in this case, would be the accurate term since he clearly has not only no overriding loyalty but also, unlike Brown, no cultural affinity to either country.
Beyond that however he is clearly one of the stateless one worlders of which eurocrats & very many world economic & political leaders are made up.

His mother Hazel (née McLay) was the daughter of Protestant parents who had moved to Glasgow from Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, according to The Blairs and Their Court (Beckett/Hencke).
Believe me, rush-is-right, Farage has been getting out rather a lot - particularly in Strasbourg, if Private Eye is to be believed.
