Gillian Shephard is not pleased. Next week she intends speaking on a debate in the House of Lords on womens' issues. She got hold of the Library brief on the debate to discover that a neat bit of airbrushing out of history had occurred. It seems the brief said that Joan Ruddock was the first ever Minister for Women in 1997. Lady S phoned the House of Lords library to query that piece of information and was informed they had read it on a specialist 'wimmins' blog. Standards are obviously slipping, for Gillian herself was appointed Minister for Women in 1992.So in a few short hours she had not only been abolished by the House of Commons, she had been airbrushed out of history too. Sometimes life just ain't fair.

If there's anything more grating than that woman's voice, I would not like to hear it. A more fitting Minister for Women, I cannot imagine.
Bloggers, eh ? Although I often like to drop by 'Snopes' to see what myth and urban legend is gaining currency lately. In the 'perception is reality' world we live in truth and accuracy scarcely seem to matter. As someone once said 'A lie is around the world before the truth has got its boots on'. Well, they probably didn't say that, but I couldn't be arsed to look up the exact quote..

I think the quote was originaly from Jim Callaghan.
I seem to remember the Labour Party trying to pass off Margaret Jay as the 'first female leader of the House of Lords', until it was pointed out to them that Janet Young had done the job 15 years previously.
Why didn't some kind soul airbrush the picture you've used of her...
