The Indy Accepts Effects of Globalisation
Next time you read a story in The Independent bewailing the fact that big companies are outsourcing some of their core functions to other countries, you might like to know that The Indy has just outsourced its finance department to Clonakilty in Co Cork, Ireland. Nothing wrong with that at all, but what's good for the globalisation goose...

miserable rag.
GDP is higher in Ireland than in the UK now. So this hardly counts as the sort of outsourcing that bleeding heart liberal whinge about. In fact Ireland is full of properly educated, hard working people unlike its larger neighbour. No doubt the paper's Irish owner knows this!
I agree with etzel pangloss, The Indy really is a miserable rag. And, I wish the Torygraph were half as well written.
Maybe the Torygraph's new editor could dumb it up a bit. It wouldn't be hard.
Writers of blogs cannot complain about the world being global. The blogoshpere flows ideas and information worldwide in seconds. Those who write newspapers might be able to remain in ignorance as to the how the world works now, but they must be incredibly unobservant, and short-sighted not to realise.
druid. have you ever been to ireland or have you only read about it in newspapers? very friendly place and i love going there, but it's not all as you say.
Telegraph. Too much for paper boy to get through letter box. Yet nothing to read. Nothing of interest before pp 17 or 18. Very poor letters page. Who cares what these columnists thinks ? Simon Heffer. Not worth opening the plastic bag for the other stuff. If they continue to undermine leadership of Con party it will be no grat hardship to cancel.
Were I a journalist I might check a couple of points, such as: is the Independent owned by an Irish company, Tony O'Reilly's Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd for example.
And then I might try to establish whether O'Reilly's outfit had an existing business relationship with the Clonakilty operation. Dating back to 2004 perhaps.
Were either, or both of my notions true, I might consider this 'outsourcing' to be globalisation on a village scale.
Regards etc
I get the Indy and don't recall them moaning about globalisation - then again I never read the comment section in newspapers (usually too busy forming my own opinion...)
I used to get the Times before Murdoch turned it into the Sun with smaller print...
"Bleeding heart liberals" eh druid? Proper liberals believe in free trade and have done since the 19th century, mate... I'll thank you not to use it in the pejorative sense! For substitution you may use "protectionist" or "limp-wristed" :P
